I have discovered that Rants comprise 8 categories of errors:

  • Historical - Wellesly, the future Duke of Wellington, was not a Lieut-Colonel in 1808; you could not visit the National Art Gallery during the Regency;
  • The Royal Navy and the Army - common themes are a misunderstanding of the purchase of commissions; the ranks of heroes and the military formations.
  • Geographical in either a historical context - while the shortest and quickest route between France and England is indeed Calais-Dover, soldiers returning from the Peninsular War campaigns could not use this route for, I would have thought, the obvious reason that France was enemy territory - or the geographical context - I'm still trying to find a cliff above a white beach within a day's carriage ride of Venice.
  • Lexicon abuse - putting into the mouths of characters words that were not in use in Regency Britain - e.g. gotten & dime
  • Americanisation of First and abbreviated names - e.g. Chad coupled with bizarre abbreviations of Christian/First names - Imy for Imogen
  • Titles the misunderstanding of allocation of geographical locations for Titles - Willowbrook for a Dukedom
  • Word misuse & spelling errors other than the expected US English spelling differences - for example the calling of 'wedding bands' (banns)
  • Cultural misunderstandings - the Fête (not Fete) at the end of the harvest was and is still known as the Harvest Festival and sometimes as the Harvest Festival fête.

The jury is out on whether or not Rants should be attributed to the publications from which they come - for the time being they will be unattributed.

UPDATE 15 October 2013: Rants will now be attributed.
