Title: The Promise

  1. Marilyn: "He went off somewhere, most likely to Suffolk High Street to take care of something - only God knows what."
  2. The duke: "Suffolk has such a fine High Street, Lady Elizabeth."
  3. Lady Elizabeth: "Lady Marilyn, Miss Wood and I were going to take the carriage into High Street today."

Jings!

#1 implies Suffolk High Street is a town.

#2 implies Suffolk is a town with a fine High Street

#3 implies that High Street is the name of the town.

The reality is, that in the geography of England, SUFFOLK is a county (not a town) in which there are not any towns called High Street.

Title: The Pretenders

"He threw another stone, this one with force. It must have gone half-way to America, I thought."

The action takes place on the south coast of England, within sight of the Isle of Wight.

No English person living on the southcoast would be unaware that if the stone had continued skipping across the water, it would have landed in France. So why did she think America?

Title: The Banished Bride

An ambush takes place near Ailsa Crag

'Crag' is the less commonly used version of 'Craig', which means a rugged cliff. Ailsa Craig is an island in the Firth of Clyde possessing rugged cliffs, which seems an unlikely place to set an ambush.
